Runaway Bicycle
Runaway Bicycle is a consciously crafted Indian brand. Born in a small one-bedroom apartment in 2014. Founder Preeti Verma juggled her day job in advertising, to put together a collection during after work hours. The aim was to create clothing that felt comfortable before looking good. Backed by a strong knowledge of traditional weaving techniques and a passion to incorporate comfort and beauty into everyday life.
Runaway Bicycle’s work today, essentially rests in linking the skills of traditional weavers and dyers across India with those of the craftsmen working out of the studio. The collective skills they bring is an accumulation of knowledge passed down through many generations. Eventually resulting in items that defy trends and seasons, and will be handed down to future generations.
As a design philosophy, Runaway Bicycle believes the most comfortable clothes are worn by children and people employed in physical labour. The likes of peasants, painters, road workers, mechanics and very often the clothes our parents wore. This awareness bears out in a stubborn penchant for the lightness of the fabrics employed and a design aesthetic that values comfort over form.
Every woven material used in their collection is created by their artisans. This results in careful thought about the entire garment and the flexibility of the width of the material used which allows for creativity to be inserted into every aspect. A beautifully coloured selvedge is left raw and becomes a striking hem detail. Beautiful finishings that allow garments to be worn inside out for an alternative look etc. Every material, seam and finishing shows the skill of the artisan and the beauty of carefully considered design.
