The company was founded by my great great grandfather. He got his education and worked at a big spinning mill in the South of Sweden, but dreamed of having his own business. After looking around for opportunities, he found a small spinning mill outside of Klippan which he decided to take over. Klippan Yllefabrik has always been a relatively small, specialised and family owned company. We take pride in the craftmanship and try to develop with time. This goes hand in hand with our philosophy which is to combine tradition, quality and design by offering beautiful textiles produced with great care for the environment.
What unique design elements characterise Klippan's collections? Are there any manufacturing practices or physical aspects that set Klippan apart from other brands?
Klippan stands for playful and colorful designs inspired by our Nordic heritage. I am proud of the way we have managed to turn a really traditional product into a design element. Early on, we understood the value of working with skilled technicians and designers to challenge the limitations of what is possible to do with traditional weaving technique. Since we dye and weave ourself, we can make small collections and offer a wide range of different colours and designs.
Could you elaborate on the ethical practices and values Klippan upholds in the production process, particularly within the context of using natural and eco-friendly materials?
We buy the wool directly from source which means that we have full traceability of where the fibres come from. We make sure that the farmers meet strict rules regarding animal welfare and do not practice mulesing. The wool is gently washed with NPEO free 6 Mole detergents and no bleach is added. My father always gets quality samples which he control before proceeding. All steps involved in the making of a blankets are done in our own factory. We spin, dye, weave and brush ourselves. This means that we can check along the way that everything is done in a correct way. We focus on making our products as environmentally friendly as possible. We have, for example, decreased the usage of energy in making a blanket by more than 50% in 5 year.
We mostly work with wool because that is our area of expertise and it is a fantastic fibre. Wool is healthy, durable, moisture absorbent and dirt resistant. But, best of all, it is 100% biodegradable.
It has been so nice to share our story with you. We love working with MamaOwl as it is a great fit, because we both believe in high quality natural products for a natural life. we both believe in designing products with a purpose and a story.
What is your favourite piece right now?
My favourite is House in the forest. To me it tells the story of honouring nature, living in harmony with it and leaving as few imprints as possible.
Thank you Pernilla
