a wonderful book about different ways of relating to the natural world

This is utterly wonderful book, where natural dyeing is portrayed as a way to attentive and observant appreciation of the diversity of natural world. As well as beautiful in aesthetic sense and textual/image design, the book reveals the unique possibilities of taking time and immersing into gentle sensorial experience and the nuances of colours and textures in the natural world, of which we are part of, and which we utilise - and re-create - in the garments we wear. I came across Kathryn Davey's work through her work for MamaOwl wool edition, and ordered this book as an inspiration for our home-educated children. We tried a few of the dyes, first just with alder cones that grow in our garden. The equipment necessary for dyeing is not a limitation as many of already owned items can be repurposed (our slightly damaged pasta pot serves perfectly well, as well as some bowls of cracked enamel...), and we started with old shirts and textiles we can then use for other art projects, creating gifts for family and friends. It is nice to experience and better understand the processes of transformations, where the same dye has very different effects on the range of natural fabrics that can be employed for this purpose. I believe her classes and workshops must be as wonderful experience as her book - which I already ordered again as a gift for a friend. https://kathryndavey.com/
