Wool Lovers Series - Maria Godinez

We asked long time customer Maria Godinez to share a little more about herself and her journey of growing to love wool.  Grab a cup of tea and enjoy her lovely writeup below!

My name is Maria Godinez and I am mom to Sebastian, Lucía and Leonila. I’m often asked about how my social media became what it is today. Everything began when I held my firstborn for the first time where I wanted to hold those moments forever and thus my love for photography was born.

I began sending these photos to my family who live in my home country, and it was my way to communicate with them. During every call my dad would ask me to send him photos of his grandchildren, I continued to send them daily. He would always tell me that with every photo he was missing us a little less.

In 2020 I lost my dad from cancer, Nila was a 3 month old baby and it was an extremely hard time. I began this journey after I received the advice from a loved one to spread those photos in my social media, in hopes that sharing these photos could bring me comfort and to my surprise -it did. I continued sharing tiny moments of our life, especially during this beautiful journey of motherhood.

I was born and raised in Mexico, in a little town named Huasca de Ocampo. I migrated to Washington in 2009 and it was such a big challenge for me, the biggest was leaving my family. The first years were so hard, you need to adapt to the idea that this is your new home. It became harder once I had become a mom -raising my children far away from our family is and has always been a big challenge. I love our home, but there is always something in my heart that makes me wish to have my family close, especially close to my children.

I remember vividly the moment that first ignited my passion for wool clothing. I was on the MamaOwl Wool Lovers Facebook group where they were talking about the benefits of wearing wool and it prompted me to do my own research which totally made me fall in love with all the details and benefits. The first package that arrived from MamaOwl, the softness, the smell  and the coziness just all of that made me fall in love.

There is nothing more perfect for the delicate skin of our children than natural fibers that keep them comfortable and warm. When I discovered wool my first child was already 5 and my second child was around 2 years old. I was so impressed with the amazing quality, and how it would keep them warm in the low temperatures.

When it comes to choosing clothing for my children, I look into sustainability, ethics, durability and comfortability is important too. I try to cater for my children’s interests too depending on what they like the most. Every kid is in a different world, especially when they are different ages. I try to stick with this list from when they are a baby until the age where they can pick the path they want to take.

My son Sebastian for example has a big sensitivity with wool, so at 12 years old he picks what he wears. Lucia, on the other hand, has been wearing wool since a toddler, and when going to school she knows the weather appropriate items to wear during rainy or snow days.

Over the years I have built up a few personal tips that I often share with anyone wanting to make the most of wool and its amazing properties whilst remaining comfy still. By wearing your first layer of merino wool, that will help to keep the body temperature regulated whilst remaining super soft. Wool socks are a big help too, because cold feet often prevent the rest of your body from warming up.

After the first layer then I follow adding layers depending on the weather. Merino wool fleece is a win for me, no matter the weather the softness will keep you warm and cozy.  During the snow season we add another layer of  boiled merino wool, since this is more resistant with snow. Of course you add the hats, gloves and wool lined boots too.

Wool is known for its longevity, but proper care is essential. With that in mind,I always hand wash our pieces with an organic wool wash soap. I hang dry and use no fragrances or detergent ever. It’s simple, wool exhibits great antibacterial properties, so I wash after a couple of uses and only as necessary.

MamaOwl cares for the skin of our children and every brand that I’ve tried is truly amazing. Disana, Engel, and SISKIN are always on my list. I also love Bisgaard and would love to try the Blundstone boots in the future. For children's toys I truly love them all, they all are special and different compared to the ones sold in the stores around.

Every purchase from MamaOwl is a beautiful surprise, even the smell of our parcels are full of magic. Every package comes with what my children need to spend a warm season and it arrives in the perfect time even when I need it faster. The customer service is super sweet, they mail the packages very fast which is even more exciting!

Sustainable clothing is a huge positive change in our world right now, considering a big problem is plastic pollution, there will be a big difference in our environment when communities starts choosing what is right and what will benefit the way we live. Sustainable clothing is a choice that has the power to heal our world.
When it comes to our family choosing sustainable clothing we are actively teaching them to care and the importance of conscious consumption. Their skin need natural fabrics, we don’t want it to absorb all those hard chemicals from fast fashion. Everything that their skin touches can absorb chemicals that can be harmful, let’s care for them. If we care now, they will care in the future.

Maria, thank you so much for taking the time to share these words with us. I speak for our whole small team when I say how excited we get to spot something of ours in your beautiful photos and stories. It’s beautiful to see our pieces stand the test of time and be passed down via siblings and reading your story on how you fell in love only relatively recently makes it all the more special!
