About The Brand+-
SISKIN
SISKIN is our own label of timeless clothing, designed in house and exclusive to us here at MamaOwl.
Launched in October 2019 and made sustainably using natural fabrics, it’s been created to last, and to be loved and passed on. Clothing that feels wonderful to wear while playing and exploring the world.
Anna talks about the inspiration behind SISKIN
The shades we have chosen for Siskin are some of my favourites, I went to a Waldorf school, which inspires my colour choices. These are colours that feel grounded and give a sense of comfort and warmth, perfect for childhood. The Siskin collection does not follow the high street seasons or trends. Instead, we’ve created the range to be timeless, to be unisex and to be long lasting. The pieces are trans-seasonal in that they work for Winter, Summer and everything in between, whether worn alone or layered for the colder months.
Why SISKIN?
A Siskin is a small yellow songbird, my oldest child loves birds so we have been paying a lot of attention to them in the last few years. One day on Hackney Marshes, with my kids, we spotted an image of a Siskin on one of the information boards. I knew right away that was the perfect name for the brand. A friend of mine drew a two-tone Siskin feather for our logo and labels.
The Materials
Every piece in the Siskin collection has been sustainably made in Europe using the best yarns we could find. As with everything else we sell, we’ve looked for producers who have full traceability in their production process and who put ethics, quality and sustainability first. All our wool is from sheep who are guaranteed not to have been mulesed.
Texture and Tone
I’ve also been careful to make sure that the texture of the garments feels just right – it is all comfortable and comforting, not itchy or scratchy. All the kids on the photoshoot made comments about how the clothes felt soft and were really snuggly.
Fit to Last
All our garments are made with merino, lambswool and silk and we are introducing new fabrics and compositions each season.
Over the years at MamaOwl we’ve managed to learn a lot about fit when it comes to children’s clothes. So for Siskin, it was essential that every piece we created was not just soft, comfortable and durable but also a great fit. All the fabrics we’ve chosen for the range are woven to be comfortable and to have some stretch so you can move freely, dance and play.
We hope you and your kids enjoy wearing SISKIN as much as we enjoy creating it.
Product Care+-
You don’t need to wash SISKIN wool/silk & wool fleece products before wearing them for the first time. After the manufacturing process, all fabrics and yarns are washed to rinse out any excess dye residues, in the first place, and secondly to remove knitting oils and dirt.
We recommend you follow the wash care instructions on the care label but follow the tips below. Even with our wool experience we still sometimes make mistakes!
Hand-washing
Briefly swirl around a little in plenty of luke-warm water, squeezing gently, using a mild detergent specially designed for wool, then rinse in water of the same temperature. Do not put in the tumble drier or on radiators as this will make the wool hard, brittle and felted. We recommend squeezing (not wringing) the products in a towel after rinsing, pulling them into shape while wet and drying them flat.
DO NOT: Rub, wring out or spin, expose to changes in temperature (first warm water then cold, or vice versa). Do not soak.
Machine-washing
Only if your machine has previously been tested to handle natural, untreated wools.
Select the Wool Wash/Hand Wash programme. “Cold” or max. 30 °C in the machine. This will keep your wool garments soft, elastic and absorbent. With machine-washing too, it is very important that the temperature is the same for both washing and rinsing and that you check that a low spin speed is either part of the programme or can be set manually – max. 400-500 rpm. You should also use a wool-wash detergent for machine-washing, as silk and wool are protein fibres which should basically be cared for with products in the slightly acid pH range (below 7 pH value). These products do not remove the natural oil and protect the fibres at the same time.
Below are a few top tips for some of our most popular fabrics.
Organic Merino Wool Fleece
Only hand-wash fleece, even if the brand label suggest machine washing. Please look below for hand-washing advice on how to wash your fleece.
Organic Merino Wool & Wool/Silk
Washing by hand is recommended or possibly machine washing if you trust your machine to keep the same wash and rinse temperature throughout. In any case, you should use a wool detergent because these do not contain any enzymes (protease) and are pH-neutral. This is essential for your washing machine’s wool programme. However, a gentle baby shampoo can also sometimes be a good substitute when it comes to a quick hand-wash.
Organic Cotton Pointelle
Our Organic Cotton Pointelle can be machine washed at 40 degrees. We recommend to wash inside out and reshape after wash. Please follow care label inside garment.
Linen
Our Linen can be machine washed at 40 degrees. We recommend ironing inside out only. Please follow the care label inside the garment.
